Best Hiking Trails Near Great Pines

Old Forge is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering various recreational activities like hiking, boating, fishing, and skiing. The surrounding Adirondack Park is known for its vast wilderness and diverse hiking trails, making it a prime location for exploring nature.

Some of the popular hiking trails in and around the Old Forge area:

  1. Bald Mountain (Rondaxe Fire Tower): This is a popular, relatively easy 2-mile round-trip hike that takes you to the summit of Bald Mountain. At the top, you’ll find the Rondaxe Fire Tower, which offers incredible panoramic views of the Fulton Chain of Lakes and the surrounding Adirondack Mountains.
  2. Rocky Mountain: Another short and family-friendly hike, this 1-mile round-trip trail leads to the summit of Rocky Mountain, providing spectacular views of Fourth Lake and the nearby mountains.
  3. Cascade Lake Loop: This 6-mile loop trail takes you around the picturesque Cascade Lake, offering scenic views of the lake and surrounding wilderness. It’s a moderate hike suitable for most hikers, with opportunities for fishing and birdwatching along the way.
  4. Black Bear Mountain: This 5-mile round-trip hike provides two trail options, one more challenging than the other. Both trails lead to the summit of Black Bear Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The more difficult trail has some steep inclines and rock scrambles, while the easier trail is more gradual and better suited for families.
  5. Nick’s Lake Loop: A relatively easy 7-mile loop, this trail takes you around Nick’s Lake, offering beautiful views of the water and surrounding forests. It’s a great option for those looking for a leisurely hike or a longer walk in the woods.
  6. Sis and Bubb Lakes: This 5.5-mile round-trip hike takes you through beautiful forests, past marshlands, and along the shores of Sis and Bubb Lakes. The trail is relatively flat and suitable for hikers of all skill levels.
  7. Blue Mountain: A bit further away from Old Forge, this 4-mile round-trip hike is more challenging but offers rewarding views from the summit. The Blue Mountain Fire Tower provides panoramic views of the Adirondack Mountains and surrounding lakes.
